Denmark

Nyhavn, Denmark. One of the more scenic districts of Copenhagen on a typical foggy winter day. Nyhavn is also one of the better areas of town for boat cruises and pub-fun.

Copenhagen, Denmark.  This is the land of Christmas, and the downtown district gets into decorating in a big way.

Hojbro Plads Markt, Denmark. One of the many, many Christmas markets around Copenhagen. They're great places to shop for presents (bottom left) or for craft beers (bottom right).

Everywhere, Denmark. This country LOVES bicycles! Even on cold & rainy winter days.

Denmark, like all the Nordic countries, is a design-savvy place. Contemporary Scandinavian design is popular everywhere these days, but some of the older buildings are great examples of the original Scan Design.

Copenhagen, Denmark.  A bronze statue of the Little Mermaid, from the tale by famous Copenhagen local Hans Christian Andersen. You'd think they woulda put it somewhere with a nicer backdrop!

Tivoli, Denmark. This theme park is one of the main attractions in Copenhagen and was the inspiration for Walt Disney to create Disneyland. It's nearly 180 years old!

Hillerod, Denmark.  A short and very pleasant train ride north of the capital takes you to the small town of Hillerod, home of the Frederiksborg Castle. The castle sits on a scenic lake with sprawling gardens all around. The structure itself is fit for a king - since it's where he lived. Well worth taking the tour for views of the inside, such as the private chapel (right).

Helsingor, Denmark.  The impressive Kronborg Castle on the north coast was the setting for Shakespeare's Hamlet.  In modern times several versions of Hamlet have made been made into movies, which are filmed right here. To the right is a photo gallery of the many stars featured in these films. Frequent performances of Hamlet and other works of Shakespeare happen here; check before you go and you might get lucky.

...Some fun with Scandinavian names...

The top one would be a great name for a urologist. The middle pic must be the official beer of some local brothel. The bottom one could be the house wine featured in that establishment.
